Lydia and Julie's Sisterly Relationship

Narcissus and Goldmund

Lydia and Julie's Sisterly Relationship changes from sisterly tenderness into a fraught triangle when Julie discovers Lydia’s secret love for Goldmund. Julie is drawn toward the intimacy she observes, yet also judges Lydia for it; Lydia, meanwhile, fears both exposure and the harm the secret may do to her sister. Their encounter in Goldmund’s room makes those competing impulses impossible to contain. By morning, Lydia has chosen to disclose the affair to their father, but not Julie’s involvement—a protective omission that reveals how attachment and rivalry remain intertwined.

Sisters and a Secret

Lydia and Julie are sisters living in the knight’s household, where Goldmund’s relationship with Lydia must remain concealed. Julie recognizes the “wave of love” surrounding her older sister and is at once curious about its appeal and resistant to admitting that curiosity. Her manner toward Goldmund shifts accordingly: she treats him with exaggerated coolness, but in unguarded moments watches him with admiration and desire. She also visits Lydia in bed, seeking proximity to the atmosphere of the secret, then makes her contempt for Lydia’s transgression conspicuous.

The relationship is not a simple alliance between a knowing sister and a deceived one. Julie moves between apparent innocence and knowing provocation, while Lydia is tender toward her younger sister and acutely anxious about what she may do. Julie’s awareness gives her influence over the lovers even when she is not present: Lydia fears that Julie might expose them, and Goldmund notices Julie’s charms. The secret therefore binds the sisters together while making ordinary sisterly closeness feel dangerous.

The Night Julie Enters

After the sisters quarrel during the day, Lydia visits Goldmund at night as she customarily does. She does not tell him that she fears Julie may betray her. Instead, she lies beside him, seeks comfort in his nearness, and remains quiet as he speaks softly and touches her hair. Her silence preserves the secret for the moment, but also leaves her fear unshared.

Julie then enters the room. Lydia recognizes the danger of her presence with anguish, while Julie makes clear that she knows about Lydia’s visits. She presents Goldmund with a choice: admit her too, or have her wake their father. Goldmund lets her join them, and the three occupy the narrow bed together. The encounter turns Julie’s earlier watching and teasing into direct involvement, while placing Lydia in the position she most fears: her sister is no longer merely a possible witness but an active participant in the secret’s crisis.

When Julie reacts to Goldmund’s attention, Lydia becomes jealous and abruptly calls on her sister to leave. The outburst itself risks drawing notice, but it ends the immediate encounter. As they depart, Lydia picks up Julie’s coat and hangs it around her sister. The gesture of care and submission touches Julie and reconciles her to Lydia, even as the sisters leave with their conflict unresolved.

Disclosure and Its Limits

The night leaves all three young people alone with confusion and grief. The sisters return to their room without speaking to each other and lie awake separately. Lydia spends the remainder of the night awake; at daybreak she kneels in prayer before the small wooden figure of the Savior in her room. Once she hears their father on the stairs, she goes to him and asks him to hear her.

Lydia decides to end the affair, but her disclosure is selective. She tells her father what she has decided to reveal without distinguishing her fear for Julie’s virginity from her own jealousy, and she does not mention Julie’s part in the previous night’s encounter. That omission preserves Julie from being named in the account, even as Lydia’s disclosure places the secret at risk of ending their relationship with Goldmund. The evidence leaves the sisters’ later relationship unresolved; what it establishes is the double force of Lydia’s action, combining self-protection, concern for Julie, and a willingness to expose her own secret.
